腳踏車重量的迷思

英國一所醫院的麻醉顧問師Jeremy Groves自稱很喜歡騎腳踏車,也以腳踏車做為上下班的交通工具,他發現花大筆錢購買通勤用的腳踏車,未必能讓人更快抵達工作場所.


他花了一千英磅買了一部輕量碳纖維車架腳踏車,為了瞭解這部新腳踏車是不是比他原來以50英磅買來的二手鋼管車快,他做了為期六個月的實驗.

這六個月裡,他每天出門前會先丟擲銅板來決定騎哪一台車去醫院上班,並且記錄騎乘時間.

他發現在他往返共27英哩的通勤騎乘上,騎這二部車所花的時間並沒有明顯的差異,騎較重二手車平均花費1小時47分,騎較輕的新車是1小時48分.

他說車手減重比腳踏車減重更有益處而且成本更低,他對於買了這輛新車感到有些後悔,認為或許應該運用那些錢來填置較好的車衣,和較耐用的車燈!

他的實驗結果發表於英國醫學期刊.

Here comes Little Red the bike小紅來報到了

I declare Little Red the bike formally joins into our family bicycle fleet!

Perhaps it should have been called Little White, because it has more snow white paint than splendor red, but Little White has been designated to its elder brother, and the red color in its body is so eye catching that define its total image, thus it deserves the name Little Red.

Little Red has been built and assembled with preferably for female use in mind. It has light weight, combines mountain bike frame with road and leisure bikes characters. A successful DIY product at least for my family use!

Of course, what could not have been missed is our family bicycle's standard equipment: hub dynamo, front & rear light. Those are of importance for safe night ride, we have been used not to ride in the dark without reliable lighting system. A bicycle seems soulless without a practical lighting system!

Upon the coming of Little Red we have completed the building of our family bicycle fleet! The future duty then is to maintain its excellent mobility and foster more intimacy with them!

也許應該叫它小白,因為它的雪白漆色比艷紅色還多,可是小白這個名字已由它的兄長使用,而它車體上的紅色也醒目到給人它是紅顏色車子的印象,所以它配稱小紅.

小紅的組裝主要以供女性使用為考量,它重量很輕,使用登山車架但融入道路及休閒車的特性,起碼就我們家來說它是成功的DIY產品!

當然,不可或缺的是我們的家庭腳踏車的標準配備:發電花鼓,頭燈和尾燈.這些對於安全夜間騎乘很重要,我們已經習慣若無可靠的照明系統就不在黑夜騎車.沒有實用照明系統的腳踏車就像缺乏靈魂的腳踏車!

小紅一報到,我們的家庭車隊建置於焉完成,日後的工作將是保持它們的優越機動能力,以及培養更緊密的關係吧!

◎Replace suspension fork with KASHIMA fork (made by Shye Metal).

◎Re-grease headset (caged bearings).

For Little Silver:
◎Front wheel: new Crostini M1.1 rim with high efficiency hubdynamo threaded by using DT Swiss double butted spokes.
◎Rear wheel: new Crostini M1.2 rim with Deore XT hub threaded by using 15G DT Swiss spokes.
◎replace rear light with a brighter one-main-LED-two-lateral-LED rear light.

For Little Orange :
◎Replace both front and rear wheel sets with Crostini wheel sets removed from Little Silver (including high efficiency hubdynamo).
◎Re-grease rear hub's ball bearings.
◎replace 16 Lux front LED light to 40 Lux LED light. ◎Replace pedals with Wellgo C17 pedal.

For Little White:
◎replace rear hub with Deore LX rear hub.
◎Re-grease rear hub's ball bearings.
◎Replace 1.95 inches tires with 1.6" ROAD KING tires.

Results: improved pedaling efficiency, longer gliding distance, brighter illumination.
Little Silver and Little Orange use same model rims (Presta valve), no need to carry different back-up tubes in terms of inflation valve.

◎前輪:新Crostini M1.1輪圈使用DT Swiss雙抽鋼絲,組裝高效率花鼓發電機.
◎後輪:新Crostini M1.2輪圈使用DT Swiss 15G鋼絲,組裝Deore XT後花鼓.
◎後燈換裝一個主LED二個側向LED的較亮尾燈.

小橘:
◎換裝從小銀取下來的Crostini 輪組(含高效率花鼓發電機).
◎後花鼓滾珠軸承重上黃油.
◎以40 Lux LED前燈取代原 16 Lux LED前燈.
◎腳踏更換為Wellgo C17腳踏.

小白:
◎後花鼓更換為Deore LX花鼓.
◎後花鼓滾珠軸承重上黃油.
◎1.95外胎更換為1.6 ROAD KING外胎.

結果:改善踩踏效率、增加滑行距離、照明亮度提高. 小銀與小橘使用相同規格輪圈(法式氣嘴),不需攜帶不同充氣嘴備胎.

Bicycle light 腳踏車燈- Lumotec IQ Fly

These two small headlights share a common appearance, but have totally different performances.
Left one uses a bulb as its light source, while the right, the most newly developed, uses a powerful LED.
The extra energy consumed to power these two lights while cycling seems no difference. But the right one gives a wider, longer and very bright lighting area, almost more than the collective performance of four bulb ones lighting simultaneously. Like other dynamo LED lights, it starts to shine at a very low speed, even at walking speed.
After using many lights, I finally see the real advance in dynamo light being brought by high tech, and it’s quite an amazing improvement upon the earlier LED light.
For a man-powered light as bright as this one, it doesn’t require recognizable extra energy to power it, and it releases a rider of the worries about when to recharge or to change batteries, in addition it has a working life of 100 thousand hours and needs no amount of maintenance, it’s quite worthy to have it.
You pedal and the light shines, it’s this direct link that makes a dynamo light so attractive. Especially when it’s practically bright enough. This surely adds another interesting space to a bicycle.

這二個小頭燈外觀一樣,可是照射效果大不相同.

左邊使用燈泡發光,右邊是最新型的強力LED燈.

踩亮這二盞燈需用的額外力量沒有什麼差別,右邊的燈照射的範圍卻比左邊的更廣、更長、也更亮,大概超過四個燈泡同時照射的表現.一如其他發電機用LED燈,這個新頭燈在速度很低時就會開始發光,甚至在走路的速度時他就開始閃耀.

用過許多頭燈之後,終於看到高科技帶來發電機頭燈的實質進步,而且是比之前的款式大大躍進.

像這種人力發電的頭燈,踩亮所需的額外體力幾乎察覺不到,也免除了何時需要充電或更換電池的擔憂,其使用壽命達10萬小時,不需要任何維護,的確值得擁有.

一踩就亮,就是這種直接關係讓發電機頭燈具有吸引力,尤其是當亮度達到非常實用的程度時,他確實給腳踏車增添了另一度空間.

Invisible transportation tool 隱形交通工具

Traffic officers are considering a draft traffic regulation requiring that cyclists must ride within one meter off the outer car parking line in the streets.
There will be no physical line painted on the pavement. Where the line exists must be judged by the cyclist himself. They call this an invisible bicycle lane concept.
Not to mention a traffic regulation must be as specific as possible, the one meter invisible lane lies in the most dangerous range for cycling in a street. It's very likely that a car driver would open its door or drive out its parking site abruptly, a cyclist constantly riding so close to the parking line, with no redundant space left as precautionary buffer zone, sooner or later he would be hit by a reckless driver.
Other propositions in the draft regulation seem more likely to dampen the convenience of cycling than to promote the use of this green transportation tool.
I think a functional infrastructure must be raised before any regulation is imposed. Doing nothing but regulating is not what a responsible government should do.
If they have difficulties in supplying bicycle lanes, why not see bicycle as it has always been, as invisible transportation tool - the regulation didn't see it, but it existed ubiquitously.
Note: I use my bicycle for leisure and sport purposes. I dare not ride into the urban jungle.

暫不提交通規則應該儘可能明確,對於在街上騎腳踏車來說,這一公尺寬的隱形車道正是最危險的區域,粗心大意的汽車駕駛人很可能穾然打開車門,或者穾然駛出停車格,而騎腳踏車的人經常這麼靠近停車線,沒有預留緩衝的預警空間,被撞上必是遲早的事.
規則草案中的其他規定,在降低騎腳踏車的方便性上,似乎甚於鼓勵綠色交通工具的使用.
我覺得做任何管理之前,應該先把基礎設施弄好,只做管理不做任何建設的政府,稱不上是一個有作為的政府.
如果政府無法提供腳踏車道,何不像以往一樣把腳踏車當成隱形交通工具-法令無視於它的存在,但它卻無所不在.
註:我的腳踏車是休閒運動用的,不太敢騎進去都市叢林.

Fixing rear light 固定尾燈

It took me some time to determine where in this bicycle to install this rear light.

This rear light has been designed to fix in the rear end of a cargo rack. But this bicycle doesn't have a rack.

I thought of fixing it in the seat post clamp, but the seat post tube is so short that its light will be blocked by the rear wheel.

If I clamp it in the seat post, the adjustment of the seat height will be constrained. So this is not an option too.

Finally, I decided to fix it just beneath the saddle, and use its fixing bolt. But this poses a danger, because if the bolt is not fastened tightly enough, the saddle may get loose, and cause an accident.

I cut two short pieces of stainless steel strips from a recycled toilet water tank push lever. After drilling holes and bending, I screwed them with the rear light body, then attached to the saddle bolt, and fastened the bolt very tightly.

The result is totally perfect!

決定把尾燈裝在這部腳踏車的什麼地方,花了我不少時間.

這個尾燈的原本設計是要裝在貨架尾端的,可是這部腳踏車沒有貨架.

想把它裝在座桿固定夾,但它的座管太短,後輪會把光線擋住.

如果把它夾在座桿上,又會影響座墊的高度調整,所以也不是理想的選擇.

最後決定把它固定在坐墊下,並利用它的固定螺栓.這有一個危險,就是如果螺栓鎖得不夠緊,坐墊可能鬆脫造成意外.

我從回收的馬桶水箱按水拉桿切出二小段不鏽鋼片,鑽孔、彎曲後,用螺絲把它們和尾燈本體固定在一起,然後穿在座墊固定螺栓上,用力鎖緊.

結果非常完美!

Months ago I read an article in a newspaper, the author suggests that any bicycle rider should pass a riding exam and get a riding license, or he/she should be punished if riding without a license and caught by a police.
Were this to come true, I think anybody walking in the streets should pass a walking exam too and hang a「Walking License」before his/her chest, or he/she should be punished.
Recent news report says that a regulation requiring the wearing of a helmet while riding a bicycle was mulled by traffic department officials.
If this is to come true, I think every walker should wear a helmet too, especially for one who is taller than 180cm, because his/her head is far higher above the ground than a short body's. If he/her falls over, the impacts on his/her head will be heavier.
Besides, a motorcycle rider should wear panoply of armors.

此事如果成真,那麼每一個行人也應該頭戴安全帽,尤其是身高超過180公分的人,因為他們的頭離地較高,跌倒的話撞擊的力道會比矮個子的大.
此外,騎機車應該全副武裝.

Order Spokes訂購鋼絲

For installing a hub dynamo in a bicycle wheel I need bespoken spokes in specific length. I asked a specialized bike shop to order those spokes for me. The boss, a licensed international cycling tournament referee, said it's impossible to order small quantity of specific length spokes.
I know his shop provides parts upgrade service for customers. It's hard to imagine he couldn't find the spokes I need. I asked then how could he upgrade hub for customers without different length spokes. He said he only uses hub with standard diameter, he never used a spoke in non-standard length.
So I had to buy those spokes from foreign country again. But the postage would be several times the price of the cheap spokes I'll buy. So I decided to buy some additional parts to spread the postage, though those parts were not needed immediately, but the good quality of German parts was also an attraction.
Seven days later upon receiving my purchase a strong feeling of services differences between local and German bike shops stroke me hard. Is this also the distinction between developing country and developed country?
為了在腳踏車輪子安裝輪軸發電機,我需要使用特定長度的輪幅鋼絲。我請一家專業腳踏車店的老闆幫我訂購,那位老闆-一位合格國際自由車裁判,說不可能訂購數量不大的特定長度鋼絲。
我知道他有在幫顧客升級更換零件,很難想像他無法訂購我需要的鋼絲。我問沒有不同長度的鋼絲,他怎麼為顧客更換輪軸。他說他只使用標準直徑的輪軸,沒有用過非標準長度的鋼絲。
所以我只好再從外國買進來了,可是郵費將數倍於我要的便宜鋼絲的價格,因此只好多買一些另外的零件來分攤郵費,雖然那些零件沒有立即的需用性,不過德國零件的優良品質實在很具吸引力.
七天後,收到我購買的東西時,本地和德國腳踏車店服務水準不同的感覺強烈浮現,這也是開發中國家和已開發國家的區別吧?

Love River bicycle track (2) 愛河自行車道

I hit upon the Love River bicycle track again with my family members yesterday night.

It was still a nightmare riding among hustling traffics between my home and where the track is available.

Along the track we could see every glorious light show and their reflections on the river, those scenes gave the city center a colorful night. Near the end there were road shows and crowded visitors, and pedestrians seemed more like to amble on the bicycle track than on pedestrian path, so we had no choice but to ride on the pedestrian path.

Besides, there are some dangerous points on the track and some parts of the track surface need to be smoother, because this track is not for off-road purpose. One should be very careful especially while riding at night.

In a wood plank section Amy fell off her bicycle, because she didn't notice the low wooden sidewall, same darkly colored as the track itself, dividing the track from neighboring pedestrian path and crushed onto it.

Overall the track is a good idea of how bicycle tracks can coexist with busy streets, and provide safe riding spaces with sufficient length. This has been a rare and precious public facility in our urbane center.

On return course, we encountered heavy rains, and we continued to push forward with our eyes barely opened. During those 30 minutes the summer heat suddenly disappeared, although we were soaked, we felt this quite an unusual experience.

昨天晚上再度和家人騎上愛河自行車道.

一如往常,從家裡到可以進去自行車道這一段路程交通繁忙,騎腳踏車如做惡夢.

順著自行車道,沿途可以觀賞每一個華麗的燈火秀和其河中倒影,這些使得整個都心的夜晚變得繽紛多彩,近末段的地方有不少街頭表演和擁擠的遊客,而行人似乎比較喜歡在自行車道上漫遊,較不喜歡在人行道上行走,在這種情況下我們只好騎上人行道了.

此外,自行車道上有幾處危險地點,部份路面也應該做得平滑些,畢竟此車道不是做越野用途的,夜晚騎乘更需格外小心.

Amy在一段木板車道上跌落腳踏車,因為她沒有注意到分隔自行車道和人行步道的低矮分隔木頭,它的顏色和車道是相同的深暗顏色,夜晚很難分辨,所以不小心擦撞到了.

整體來說,這個自行車道展現了自行車道與繁忙街道共存的不錯概念,也提供了足夠長度的安全騎乘空間,這在一般市中心應該是少見又珍貴的公共設施.

回程時大雨傾盆,眼睛因雨水淋打很難睜大,我們仍然繼續往前推進,雨中三十分鐘暑氣全消,全身雖然濕透,卻是難得的經驗!

Carry DSLR Camera While Cycling 攜帶單眼照相機騎腳踏車

Somebody feel its troublesome carrying a DSLR camera while cycling, because DSLR camera is bulkier than point-and-shoot digital camera, and most DSLR camera photographers would inevitably carry one or two extra lenses, this make camera packs even heavier and bulkier, thus make it uncomfortable to carry using a shoulder strap while cycling. Especially here we have warmer and more humid climate, which make backpacking even harder to tolerate.

The main points of how to carry a DSLR camera while cycling are: first, safely guard the camera from road shocks and dropping; second, handy to use, without the need to unload camera pack before taking pictures; third, free your body from the burden of camera weight.

I got a handlebar bag, which is stoutly constructed, having soft interior liners, has an insulated cylindrical cloth chamber for carry a warm or cool drink bottle, and a front flattened compartment for carrying small items.

I experimented with this bag to carry my DSLR camera while cycling a few times, the result is satisfactory. I put my DSLR, with a standard or shorter long-lens mounted on, in the main chamber. Insert the longest lens into the cylindrical cloth chamber, they fit nicely, and won't collide with the camera body in the main chamber. Other small accessories are stored in the front compartment.

While cycling the suspension function of the front fork would absorb part of the shocks caused by rugged road surfaces. So the shocks transmitted to the handlebar were reduced. Because the handlebar bag was hanged instead of being seated on the handlebar, the remaining shocks transmitted to the handlebar bag were then softened further, providing a relatively comfortable cabin for the camera. Therefore unless riding in a rather challenging trail, it's unlikely the usual riding shocks would hurt the camera.

Other tips on achieving this safely: Choose a stoutly built handlebar bag with thicker and finer liners. Choose a handlebar bag fixing seat that match your bag and strong enough. There's ever a case in which a big cycling accessory company recalled one model of its fixing seat, because a riding accident happened due to a cyclist clashed upon the handlebar bag fallen from a broken fixing seat produced by this company. Don't put all your shooting equipments into the handlebar bag; the road shocks would put extra pressures on the bag, and too much weight will make the handlebar difficult to maneuver.

攜帶單眼照相機騎腳踏車的確有點令人頭疼,因為它的體積比較龐大,而且大部分單眼照相機的使用者都會再加帶一、二支鏡頭,這使得相機包變得又大又重,用肩帶背著騎實在很不舒服,尤其在我們這裡氣候溫熱又潮濕,使用背包背其實也不怎麼好受.

騎腳踏車該如何攜帶單眼照相機的考慮重點有:安全保護相機,避免路面振動和掉落的傷害;方便使用,不需解開相機包綁帶即可使用;免除身體背負重擔.

我找到了一個做得蠻強韌、有柔軟襯裡主置物室的手把袋,它有一個圓筒型、用來裝冷熱水瓶的隔熱小布袋,前面另有一個扁平的、放隨身小物品的置物室.

我試用這個手把袋裝單眼照相機騎腳踏車好幾次,結果令人滿意. 我把裝上標準鏡頭或較短長鏡頭的機身放在主置物室裡,把最長的鏡頭塞進圓筒型的水瓶袋內,這不但非常適配而且也不會和機身發生碰撞,其他小配件則放入前置物室.

騎乘的時候避震前叉會吸收部份不平路面產生的振動,所以傳遞到手把的振動就減少了.而手把袋是懸掛在手把上,不是'坐' 在手把上的,因此傳遞到手把袋的振動會被進一步軟化,提供相機一個安適的棲身之所. 因此除非是在相當顛簸的小徑騎乘,否則相機是不太可能被震壞的.

其他安全上應注意的事項: 選擇牢固的、襯裡較厚而且細緻的手把袋. 選擇堅固的、和手把袋搭配的固定座.曾有一家大腳踏車配件廠因固定座斷裂,手把袋掉落被腳踏車手壓上摔倒的意外事件,而全部回收該型固定座. 不要把所有的攝影器材統統塞進手把袋,路面振動會給手把袋帶來額外的壓力,而且太重會影響手把的控制.
