Not bad news

We were used to a world of excessive consumption, and when we were glutted with the massive materials produced by the industry, the economy ground to a halt, albeit this time it is mainly triggered by the rich nations’ greedy money mongers.
Governments around the world are now eager to install various economic stimulus measures trying to maintain or even boost their own economy. The main pursuit of these measures is to persuade people back into massive consumption, thus provides economic growth spur.
But when people are already satiate and lack of confidence in their future, the promotion of consumption might has limited effect. From the viewpoint of sustainable development for the world this should be good news!
What government officials are concerned are how to hold on to their own short term positions, not the wellbeing of the earth and all of its creatures, and surely that is not their political responsibilities.
But:
Why not let the pace of natural resources exploitations slow down a little bit?
Why not let us have more days of bluer sky and fresher air?
Why not let us have more quiet time to reflect on our lives?
And:
Why not governments act only on the basic requirements of disadvantageous people, not on the survivals of greedy financial institutions?
